Whio will try rubbish free lunches next week!

Image
Look at all this rubbish left around our school!! If the enviro team hadn't picked it up, it could have ended up in our rivers, oceans or parks. All this rubbish will now end up in landfill!! And the plastic rubbish will be there forever!! We feel disgusted!! Next week, the children have decided to have a go at having rubbish free lunch boxes to help save so much rubbish being left around the school and then heading to landfill. Please help support their initiative by rethinking how you pack their lunches. Some ideas for different packaging options are - reusable containers - paper towels or bees wax wraps - leaving food that is in lunch boxes with covered sections wrapper free - buying less pre-packaged food Thank you for helping the children with their plan for reducing our waste!

Our Matariki Feast

Image
After doing lots of learning about Matariki this week, we had a Matariki Feast on Friday - Delicious Soup!!!

Continuing with our kindness theme...

Image
We have continued out focus on spreading kindness in Whio. On Wednesday, we wrote compliments to each other. We tried to be specific with our compliment and give it to someone who we don't always play with. Giving out these compliments filled everyone's bucket!! As you can see by the children's faces as they opened them! We have also been filling out a 'Random Acts of Kindness Chart'. We have been trying lots of different ways of sharing kindness with others.

Dinosaur Eggs Sensory Play

Image
Last week we filled balloons with water and dinosaurs. We put them in the freezer. Today we got them out to see what they looked like. The water froze in a very unusual way. It was interesting to see the dinosaurs inside. We loved touching the ice even though it was so cold!

Creativity and Coding

Image
Today the children were using the language of coding to direct each other through a maze they made. One person acted as the 'robot' and the other 'programmed' the robot to move through the maze. We had to check that the 'programmer' was correct with their coding... some of us went through the sides of the maze and some of us made it to the end! What a lot of fun. Thanks Catherine for your help!! What fun!!

We love Open Door Friday!

Today we have been very busy getting up to all sorts of cool activities. Some of us painted kindness stones (to be gifted to special people once finished), others held a disco in the blue room and we also made frozen dinosaur eggs! Dinosaurs are still very popular in the studio at the moment. There was also plenty of making and building going on! Here are a few photo highlights of our morning. Dinosaur eggs ready to freeze! Painting our kindness stones white, ready for our colourful designs soon!  Blue room disco  I wonder where the aeroplane is off to today? Lego building is always more fun in disguise!

Do you now what Capillary action is? We do!

Image
We are loving doing more science experiments this week. In one of our favourites we made a walking water rainbow. This helped us to learn about capillary action- how fluids can travel against gravity. We were also delighted with the beautiful rainbow we created.  This is the cups at the start of the experiment. This was after 24 hours.

Rugby League Stars!

Yesterday we had a special visit from the Manley Sea Eagles Rugby League team. The team are here to play the Warriors at the weekend. They did a special presentation on Respect and how to treat other people. It tied in perfectly with the kindness message we are focussing on at the moment. Quinn and Tylim were chosen to go and see them. They were very excited to get a photo with one of the players afterwards.
