2018 Whio Blog

We have had so much fun today in Whio today for open door Friday! We have had a dance party in the blue room,  made 'roaring' Father's Day cards,  did coding using the Scratch programme on the Ipad, made beautiful daffodils for the Cancer Society Daffodil day, played with musical instruments, built awesome marble runs,  ate a special cake to say farewell to Kevin (who is going back to China to live for 2 years) and many more fun adventures. Here are some photos to show you how much fun we had!

Today we made monsters out of colourful shapes! Not just any monsters though.... the children had to follow strict guidelines about how to build their monsters. Check them out below!

We love exploring!  We love creating!  We love learning new things!  We love challenging ourselves! We LOVE Friday!!!!

The kids in Whio had an awesome time doing some baking to say a big 'THANK YOU' to some very special people. The children showed such great team work, sharing and and taking turns.

In maths we have been learning all about doubling and halving our numbers to 10. We have also been learning about fractions, first halves and quarters of objects, and now of numbers to 20. We loved making Pizza to practice this skill. To make the pizzas we (in pairs):  - 'Cut' the pizza in half using a pen, so both child had an equal half each  - We used lots of strategies in our maths brains (counting on fingers, reverse knowledge of doubles, counting the topping ) to decide what half of the number would be.  - We put the toppings on the pizza and counted to check if we were right. We think they looked delicious when they were all cooked up!! Come and check them out on the wall of our class room. We wrote a recipe with our maths learning for you to see.

Today we enjoyed baking for our PMP helpers. It was a lot of fun bashing the biscuits and cutting the lollies! It was hard not to eat it but it is nice to give our baking away as gifts for all the help we got at PMP!! We also enjoyed playing and being creative in the studio!

We have all been super busy today building with Lego, dancing, making pikelets, creating paper planes and origami boxes, building huts, colouring patterns, building construction, playing musical instruments, skipping and much much more! We love Fridays! We used the pikelets to help teach fractions- 1, 1/2 and 1/4. 

This morning we shared with the children a trolley of rubbish that Phil (our wonderful caretaker) had collected from the playground over 2 days this week. We were all very shocked about how much rubbish there was and it was a great reminder about why Rubbish free lunches are best! Today we had 41 children in Whio with Plastic free lunches. Well done Team!

Today was a little different...We had an assembly to celebrate our Chinese sister school's visit to Halswell School. After assembly we had buddies- on a Wednesday! Today we got to explore and play with lots of new construction kits that the Otawhito children have in their Learning Studio. It was lots of fun!
