T13 Walk with Constable Ross

Image
Today we walked School Rd with Constable Ross to learn about how to stay safe when crossing the road. We now know to STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN, before crossing and never to stand behind parked cars. We learnt that you have to be 145cm tall before you are allowed to travel by car without a booster. Thanks Constable Ross for teaching us! And thank you to Catherine an Katrina for joining us!

Constable Ross visits Whio

Image
Today Constable Ross visited our studio to introduce our road safety lessons. He reminded us of some very important things- Make it click (always wear your seatbelt) Get into the car from the footpath side Don't distract the driver Booster seats are compulsory until you are 148cm ('It's safer to wait til your 148!') The children loved being selected to ride in his 'car' with him. We are all looking forward to our road safety walk around the Halswell Community on Tuesday (T12 and 13) and Wednesday (T11) with Constable Ross.

Creating our Dinosaur Masks

Today in Whio we have had lots of fun designing and making our dinosaur masks ready to use during our Learning Celebration next Wednesday. If you come along to our studio on Wednesday (2.10 pm  in Whio) you will be able to see the children perform the Dinosaur Stomp dance wearing their masks.

Buddies Week 9 Term 2

Image
Today for buddies we used the Ipads to do some coding. We used Box Island, Beebots, Scratch Junior  and Kodable. It was lots of fun and we liked being able to show our big buddies what we could do!

We made static electricity!

We discovered that when we rubbed a balloon on our jersey and then put it on our head it made our hair stick up! It worked very well when we rubbed it directly on our heads too!

Choose to Refuse for Plastic Free July

Whio studio is participating in Plastic Free July! Our first step is to try and have lunch boxes that are plastic free! Rethink how you can prepare school lunches without using plastic. Can you use reusable containers? Can you make food yourself rather than buy them prepackaged? Can you leave things unwrapped or use bees wax wraps instead? Rethink how you buy food from the supermarket. Can you choose something that is not prepackaged in plastic? We will spend the next month posting pictures of lunch boxes that are completely plastic free. We know there are already lots of children who are bringing plastic free lunches to school! Have a look at the link below for some ideas on how to reduce plastic waste. Let's see what we can achieve together! http://www.plasticfreejuly.org/action-picker.html

Check out all the different ways we solved this maths problem!!

Image
We had to say how many dots we saw on the card but we could not count them by ones! Look at all the different ways we added them together! Some of us even had 2 ways of working it out! Way to go team! We are really growing our brains and learning that there are so many different ways to do maths!

Everyone can be a maths person!!

This week, in maths, we have been learning about brain research that shows everyone can learn maths.  We have learnt that there is no such thing as a maths person and that thinking this way can actually negatively affect learning. We know that it is a myth to think that some people are 'maths people' and some are not. We can all learn and grow our brain!! Check out this video that we watched today to show that everyone can be a maths person! https://bhi61nm2cr3mkdgk1dtaov18-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Brains-Grow-and-Change.mp4
